Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is Australian National broadcaster owned and funded by Government of Australia. This corporation plays a leading role in shaping the broadcasting in Australia. It broadcasts shows on national television, educational and cultural shows on radio, mobile services and online shows.

It was founded in 1929 as Australian Broadcasting Company, changed name to Australian Broadcasting Commission in 1932. After passing Australian Broadcasting Corporation Act in 1983, its name had to be changed to Australian Broadcasting Corporation, owned by Government but editorially independent according to the Act.

This corporation’s Board of seven Directors is selected by Governor-General on Government’s recommendation and the Managing Director is elected by these Board Members having expertise in broadcasting communications, management, technical, cultural and political interests aligned with broadcasting.

ABC board follows the principle of delivering impartial and independent news with recognized standards of objective journalism. However, corporation has face accusation from political parties to deliver partial views and news. A media credibility survey showed that ABC radio is the most impartial source of news in the country.

ABC provides services on Television, Online, Commercial, International and Orchestras.

  • It launched four TV channels namely ABC TV in 2001, ABC2 in 2005, ABC3 in 2007 and ABC News 24 in 2010.
  • Launched policies to develop web publishing in 1995. With continuous changed in online publishing like podcasting, kids’ channels and innovation division, to develop this technology, Digital Network Division was created in 2015.
  • Many radio channels and TV channels are available in Europe, North America and Asia Pacific in multiple languages by getting grants from Department of Foreign Affairs and Trades.
  • They also do content publishing, commercial sales and retail business related to broadcasting.

ABC’s key people include James Spigelman AC QC, serving as Chairman and Michelle Guthrie as Managing Director since 2016.

  1. I understood the ABC were currently interested in customer’s contributing to an overall ABC Survey for gathering the customer perspective. A link to such an invitation seems conveniently hidden – it should be as simple as googling “my ABC survey au” but it is not!

    One or two points and there is more:

    Much has changed in the ABC:
    – no longer does it parent the English language and diction
    – the diction and command of the English language on some programs is woeful that makes one wonder just how legal cases are understood in our Australian Courts of to-day………….
