Joel Edgerton is an Australian actor, filmmaker and philanthropist, born in Blacktown, NSW, Australia on 23rd June, 1974. He is in the film industry since 1995.
Joel was born to Michael and Marianne Edgerton. His father was a solicitor and property developer. He went to The Hills Grammar School and attended Nepean Drama School at University of Western Sydney and then he moved to production companies for his career.
Joel has been in many famous films such as Star Trek: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) and Star Trek: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Warrior (2011), The Thing (2011), and The Great Gatsby (2013). His other notable films include Smokin’ Aces (2006), Whisper (2006), Acolytes and Separation City. He also starred in Sydney Theatre Company’s A Streetcar Named Desire in 2009 alongside Stanley.
In 2014, he starred alongside Christian Bale in Exodus: Gods and Kings and Ramesses II. In 2014, he co-starred as corrupt FBI agent John Connolly in Black Mass with Johnny Depp. He got his critical acclaim in 2002, after his role in The Secret Life of Us as Will McGill for which he got AACTA Award for Best Lead Actor in Television Drama in 2002. He acted in Animal Kingdom (2010) and got AACTA Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 2015, he co-starred, directed, produced and wrote a psychological thriller The Gift and got nominated for Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Direction – First Time Feature Film. He again got critical acclaim for the movie Loving (2016), in which he played Richard Loving. He was nominated for Golden Globe Award for Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama.
Besides acting, he does charitable work for poor people to improve their lives and health. He is also the ambassador of The Fred Hollows Foundation.
